Wrap It UP!

So you have found that perfect gift. Congratulations! Now, how are you going to wrap it? Are you really going to pop it into a dollar-a-dozen gift bag?  If you want to make an impact even before the pièce de résistance is unveiled, use your imagination to present your present. Browse flea markets, garage sales or dollar stores for inexpensive and unique boxes, bags or other items which can be used or embellished for a personal touch. Here are some creative ideas to get you thinking “outside the box.”

• Decoupage an old cigar box with photographs or memorabilia and create a box that is a gift in itself.

• Print your favorite family photographs on plain white paper and use it for wrapping small treasures.

• Make a gift box out of holiday cards.

• Start with a plain square box, decorate it to look like a piece of cake, fill it with a special gift, then place it on a plate and “serve” it to your recipient!

• Wrap your gift with another gift. For example, you might wrap a gift with a bright silk scarf.

• Use a pretty kitchen towel to wrap a gift for a gourmet cook.

• Tie a gift for a man with a new necktie. Finish a gift for a woman with a new necklace.

• Wrap a gift for a child in a fun and colorful T-shirt, and a gift for a baby in a receiving blanket.

• Use scraps of fabric, lace or ribbon to decorate a package.

•  Pine boughs, pine cones, dried grasses and dried leaves from your backyard are festive choices to adorn gift packages.

• Trim the box or bag with real or silk flowers, or small charms. You can find inexpensive items perfect for adorning gifts in the scrapbook section of craft stores.

•  Make your own gift wrap with waxed paper and the embellishments of your choice. First, cover your ironing board with a cloth. Take a sheet of waxed paper and lay it flat on the cloth. Adorn the paper with flower petals, confetti, dried leaves, anything you like that is relatively flat. Now put another piece of waxed paper on top. Place another cloth on top of the waxed paper and run a hot iron over the top. The heat from your iron will seal the pieces together.

• A handmade gift tag is the perfect finishing touch. Use colored card stock and glue layers of decorative paper or gift wrap to the tag. Decorate with glitter, jewels and ribbon.

• Purchase unfinished wood boxes at craft or hobby stores. Paint them and decorate with stickers, rhinestones, shells or beads. The gift box becomes a one-of-a-kind treasure box. This will especially delight young children!

• Do you like to sew? Make your own fabric gift bags for bottles.

• Baskets are perfect to hold a multitude of items. You can spray paint a basket and accessorize it with anything you wish before filling it with all kinds of goodies.

A box can be more than just a box! Instead of wrapping it as a whole piece, wrap the top and the bottom separately with beautiful paper so the wrapping becomes a permanent part of the box. This way, the box becomes a treasured keepsake.

Does your recipient have a favorite collectible? Top their gift with one!

So you see, there are many ways to “wrap it up” with an extra dose of creativity and thoughtfulness. If you have created a special gift or gift package, photograph it, and mail or e-mail it to Gulf Coast Living magazine. We might display your idea next year!
