Tropical Glow!

Sitting on an immense layer of colorful glitter, orange hibiscus flowers dazzled down the center of the table. Shells and starfish were positioned in special places to add a bit of beach flair. Tropical-style plates and napkins added to this vivid motif. We celebrated Staff Photographer Tena Ellinwood’s birthday in a grand Gulf Coast Living style!

Floating Oasis

Floating Oasis

There are so many ways to enjoy the beauty of flowers. East to create, a floating flower presentation is one of grace and beauty, and can evoke a feeling of a relaxed and calming environment.

Select the container in which the flowers will float. You can choose to present flowers in large and small decorative bowls, flower pots, vases or any other container of your choice. It is best to select flowers that are in full bloom, and have somewhat of a flat underside.

Coral

Coral

Some of the most exquisite forms of art come from the depths of the ocean! The natural beauty of coral has inspired designers to use treasures from the reef on everything from coasters to candle holders to desk sets and match boxes. Its fascinating shapes and textures make coral an intriguing design element on embroidered and beaded accent pillows. The deep sea theme continues with seahorses and coral in shades of red arranged inside a striking serving tray.

Tassels: Symbols of Opulence

Tassels: Symbols of Opulence

Tassels have a long colorful history and are used around the world as status symbols and decorations.

Originating thousands of years ago, tassels have been found in the tombs of Egyptian pharaohs. Over the centuries, artisans crafted more complex and decorative tassels made of silk and fine wool. Evidence of early examples of these fine crafts can be found in Greece, Iran, Italy, China, England and France.

Beloved around the world throughout the centuries, tassels reached their pinnacle of elegance during the 17th century in France. The French Royal Court of Louis XIV influenced interior design by commissioning craftsmen to create elaborate tassels.

Treasures from the Sea

Treasures from the Sea
Popular around the world, mother of pearl or nacre is the iridescent interior lining of bi-valve mollusks found in both fresh and saltwater. For centuries, this treasure of nature has been used for practical purposes as well as decorative ones. Elizabeth I of England is credited with naming the beautiful, versatile substance “mother of pearl,” literally, since nacre is the mother of the pearl.

Nacre comes in a variety of natural colors ranging from white to black – all with the opalescent shimmer created by light reflections. Colors are created by the mollusk’s genetic make-up, available food, trace minerals, salt content and depth of the water in which it resides. Known for its strength and resilience, practical yet precious mother of pearl is often bleached and dyed for decorative use.
