In the Garden

Someone once said, “You’re closest to God in a garden.” If that is true, then Living Waters Garden Center & Gift Shoppe is heaven on earth. Because of its meditative atmosphere, it feels more like a park than a business setting. The environment is tranquil, causing stress to vanish. Tim Savage, who owns Living Waters with his wife, Elizabeth, says, “An English woman said she’d traveled throughout America, and this is the most peaceful place she’d been.”

People go out of their way to visit the unique gift shop. Unusual bird houses, indoor fountains, wind chimes and decorative pots, as well as outdoor furniture, can all be found there. “We enjoy browsing, and there’s always something new,” says a Bradenton couple who drops in every week. “We love the peaceful atmosphere.”

The folks at Living Waters are professional installers and custom-designers of ponds, as well as bridges and gazebos. According to Tim, “Aquascape Designs Inc. of Chicago, a leading wholesaler in their field, surveyed 170 of their U.S. retailers, and ranked Living Waters 10th in the nation.” Living Waters can professionally transform your yard into a peaceful, park-like setting in just a day!

The store carries gardening staples, including plants, pesticides and sod. They have a wide variety of yard and garden essentials for purchase if you would like to try your hand at creating your own oasis.

Approaching its third birthday, Living Waters evolved from Ship-Shape Landscape, Tim’s original water features installation business. Tim believes having a pond will enhance your life and the environment.  “Like fine wine, the older it gets, the better it is.  Plants become more lush and gorgeous with time. Different varieties of birds, as well as butterflies, frogs and tadpoles will visit. A habitat can be created for various fish species such as koi, tilapia and comet.” Living Waters sells these fish and can advise on their care. A recent customer told Tim, “My pond is a life-enhancer, as well as a good investment for my home.”

Some customers are concerned about the upkeep of a pond. Tim explains, “When ponds are properly installed, the upkeep is low  –  approximately three minutes a month. Filters do all the work, and they can be camouflaged in plants or landscaping, even in attractive wood pieces.”

If you are interested in seeing some water features first-hand, a self-guided Parade of Ponds Water Garden Tour will take place on April 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and April 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All homes in the tour feature beautiful ponds designed by either Living Waters or the homeowner. The tour route runs from Englewood to Bradenton, and costs $10 per person; children under 12 are free. Tickets are on sale at Living Waters Garden Center with proceeds benefiting the Sea Turtle Program at Mote Marine.
